Die Open-Source Firewall, OPNsense wird nun seit mehr als 6 Jahren entwickelt und steht seit wenigen Tagen in der Version 21.7, bereit. Der Nickname der Version 21.7 ist „Noble Nightingale“. Die Entwickler haben für diese Version von OPNsense, sehr viele Änderungen im Code vorgenommen um zuverlässige Firmwareupdates, Multilanguage Support und einen modularen Aufbau, zu ermöglichen.
Version 21.7 wird die letzte sein die auf HardenedBSD 12.1 basieren wird. Mit der kommenden OPNsense Version 21.1 wird die Basis auf FreeBSD 13 basieren.
Zu den weiteren Änderungen gehört der Installer, der nun ZFS unterstützt und zudem wurden Probleme mit virtuellen Maschinen die UEFI konfiguriert sind, gelöst. Das Userinterface (UI) wurde weiter zwischen statischen und MVC Seiten konsolidiert, das Livelog enthält nun die aktuelle RuleID und die Aliase der Firewalleinstellung unterstützen nun auch Wildcard Netzmasken.

Known issues and limitations:
NextCloud backup feature moved from core to plugins. Please reinstall if needed.
IPsec identities are now set using their explicit type. See StrongSwan documentation[24] for the old automatic defaults.
Unbound custom options setting has been discontinued. Local override directory /usr/local/etc/unbound.opnsense.d exists.
